So you want to build a wireless network to support your industrial applications? Easy, right? Just get a nice high powered Access Point, shove it up high in the air, and make sure you cover as much of your desired coverage area as you can.
There you go, job done! Actually, it couldn’t be further from the truth.
The issues encountered when deploying outdoor wireless networks.
Sticking a high powered access point (AP) way up in the air is going to cause you a number of problems. Your AP is going to be able to ‘hear’ forever, so if there are interfering devices around they’ll affect your performance.
You’re also going to get contention problems with your HUGE coverage zone. All those chatty little client radios trying to talk at once will slow your throughput down to a crawl.
And the link distances I hear you say! Yes, your AP is connecting to client devices a long way away so their ability to connect at strong throughput rates is very limited. To top that, the AP will only be able to connect to all devices at the slowest rate because it has to wait for those faraway slow clients to talk.
What to do if you need help with designing and deploying an outdoor wireless network?
These are only a few of the more simplistic problems to contend with when designing wireless networks. Looking deeper you introduce near/far, hidden node and chatty application issues into the mix, and you have an opportunity for failure. You also need an intimate understanding of the protocols that the wireless technology uses, as this can affect your approach to application integration during network design and device integration.
Don’t take on the risks and the unknown, partner with someone that has made a profession out of designing and deploying outdoor wireless networks in some of the most extreme and remote environments. 3D-P!
